Varsity, Freshman Thrill in Tripleheader Victories
With hundreds of students and faculty members cheering them on, the varsity and freshman basketball teams closed out Spirit Week on Friday with victories in the annual tripleheader against Xavier.
In the evening’s first game, the freshmen triumphed 53-51 in a last-second thriller. With the game tied and 4.2 seconds remaining, Aidan Cha ’27 caught an inbounds pass at the top of the key and sank a buzzer-beater to give the Raiders the victory. Cha finished the game with 12 points, and Dilan Karim ’27 led the team with 22 points. The game marked the first time Regis’s freshman team has defeated Xavier since 2016.
In the second game, the JV battled in a 38-18 loss. Matthew Kang ’26 led the team with 8 points.
To cap off the evening, the varsity team defeated Xavier 52-45, securing their first tripleheader win since 2015. After trailing midway through the second quarter, the team pulled away in the second half as the electric Regis fan section erupted with each made basket. Alexander Sepe ’24 scored 16 points for Regis, as did Brendon O’Keefe ’24, who drained five three-pointers in the game. Austin Mejia ’24 scored 14 and punctuated the win with a dunk in the closing minute.
Student broadcasters provided play-by-play from Xavier's gym for all three tripleheader games. You can watch those broadcasts here.
