Regis Sophomore to attend White House Science Fair Hosted by President Obama
On Monday, April 22, President Obama will host a White House Science Fair and celebrate student winners from a broad range of science, technology, engineering and math competitions. Among them will be Regis sophomore Christopher Hillenbrand '15, who earned a gold medal last summer at the 44th Annual International Chemistry Olympiad. Hillenbrand was the youngest member of the U.S. Team, and the only U.S. student at the international competition to bring home a coveted gold medal.
The science fair will be the second hosted by The President during his term in the Oval Office. The President first hosted a White House Science Fair in Fall 2010, as part of the administration’s effort to inspire students to excel in math and science. As the President stated back in 2010, "If you win the NCAA championship, you come to the White House. Well, if you're a young person and you produce the best experiment or design, the best hardware or software, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too."
After his success at the Olympiad, Hillenbrand noted that earning a gold medal far exceeded what he thought possible. "I never thought I would come this far. It’s like I’m in the middle of a dream, and I can’t wake up." That dream continues on Monday with a trip to the White House.
The event is scheduled to take place on Monday at approximately 2:25pm ET in the White House East Room. A live web stream of the event will be available at https://www.whitehouse.gov/live.
