Regis Volleyball Wins Third Straight Title
The Regis Volleyball Team completed another season of league dominance as it secured the 2013 CHSAA Title on May 20 with a win over St. Joseph by-the-Sea. Regis completed the match with a decisive 3-1 victory (25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-23). The championship win is the third in a row for Regis, and the school’s fourth in the last 5 years.
"I was certainly nervous leading up to the championship match," said Head Coach Alex Chan. "Though we beat them twice during the regular season, St. Joe's was otherwise undefeated. The fact that they had beaten every other school in league proved that they were going to be competitive. Any slight misstep on our part could have tipped the scale in their favor."
Regis secured home court advantage throughout the playoffs as a result of their first-place regular season record. Coach Chan, who completed his eleventh year at the helm of the Regis Volleyball team, made sure that every Regis player competed on the court during the championship game. "It’s important that everybody contributes. You can’t expect experienced players to win it for you. Everyone needs to earn it. That has been my philosophy for 11 years."
Chan applies his playing-time philosophy during the course of the regular season as well. "As a coach, you're always thinking about the long-term growth of the program. Getting the underclassmen on the court helps build our next generation of athletes." For Sophomore Michael Flood '15, this philosophy has paid off. "It feels great to be a part of a team that has completed a three-peat,' said Flood. "I can't wait for next year to be able to continue the tradition of Regis volleyball."
While previous Regis Volleyball teams have showcased a standout player or two, Chan noted that the collective efforts of this year's squad were much more prominent. "The learning curve was higher for this team, as on the whole we had less experienced players. The fact that the team developed their talents and refined their execution of our set plays is a testament to their dedication."
For graduating senior Kevin Flatley '13, this championship was no less significant than his past two. "Although I've been on the team for 4 years now, the rush of playing in a championship game did not change. As the championship game approached, the upperclassmen felt the pressure and responsibility to perform their best."
Flatley noted that his time on the Regis Volleyball team already stands out as one of his proudest Regis memories. "Being a part of 3 championships and playing alongside Regians from 7 different class years—ranging from the class of 2010 to the class of 2016—has been an experience that will stick with me long after I graduate."
