Dr. Gary Tocchet, First Lay Principal of Regis, to Retire
Dr. Gary J. Tocchet has announced that he will step down and retire as Principal of Regis High School at the end of the current academic year.
Dr. Tocchet has the distinction as the first lay principal of Regis. His twelve years at the helm also make him the longest-serving principal in Regis's 104-year history.
Dr. Tocchet joined the Regis staff in the fall of 2006. A West Point graduate and United States Army colonel, Dr. Tocchet earned his doctoral degree from Stanford University. Prior to Regis, he spent 16 years teaching American history, 14 of those at West Point. He also served as West Point's history department chair.
“During my time at this wonderful school, I have worked to protect and nurture its existing strengths while shaping and guiding new initiatives to meet the challenges and promise of the future," said. Dr. Tocchet in a statement to the Regis community. “It is now time for new leadership to build on that in bringing the school to a new level of excellence. As always, I remain very appreciative of all the support members of the community have extended to me over the years."
Dr. Tocchet has served the school with great care, integrity, and commitment for the last 12 years. While guiding Regis through successful accreditation cycles and Ignatian Identity and Sponsorship Reviews, he never lost his passion for teaching, and has taught a history class every year while also serving as principal.
“I know I speak for the entire community as I thank Dr. Tocchet for his dedication and tireless service to Regis," said Rev. Daniel K. Lahart, SJ, President.
“The leadership that he has exhibited will have a lasting impact on our academic and student formation for years to come. Additionally, Dr. Tocchet welcomed me warmly as I began my tenure at Regis in the summer of 2016. It has been a pleasure to work with him."
Our students, faculty, and alumni salute Dr. Tocchet for his commitment to our mission and his leadership through these past 12 years.
